# Circular Economy
Better practice for Circular Economy in subdivision design promotes reducing resource use and retaining material value throughout the lifecycle by encouraging on-site material reuse, incorporating recycled and low-impact content, supporting carbon neutral outcomes, and providing infrastructure for effective resource recovery.
In the Circular Economy category, BESS has a focus on actions that:
- support construction waste recycling to minimise landfill and recover valuable materials
- encourage adaptive re-use of existing materials and structures
- select materials that avoid harmful substances, such as those on the Living Building Challenge (LBC) Redlist
- prioritise low carbon materials to reduce the environmental impact of development
- aim for net carbon neutral outcomes across the subdivision
- provide a recycling hub to enable effective ongoing resource recovery for residents
