# Climate Resilience

Better practice for climate resilience in subdivision design includes assessing climate risks—such as extreme weather, bushfire, and flooding—and integrating responsive strategies like increased vegetation, heat-mitigating materials, and infrastructure that supports comfort and safety during climate extremes.

In the Climate Resilience category, BESS has a focus on actions that:

  • undertake a climate change risk assessment to identify and address potential hazards
  • provide shading of pathways to reduce urban heat and improve pedestrian comfort
  • use heat-mitigating material surfaces to lower ambient temperatures
  • deliver sheltered public transport stops to enhance safety and comfort during extreme weather
