# Better practice

Awarded where light to medium coloured materials (such as cream, beige, white, light grey concrete, sandstone tones, or terracotta) are used for all footpaths and streetscape surfaces (excluding carriageways) to support urban cooling.

Avoid dark-coloured materials (e.g. asphalt, slate, granite) unless at least 50% of the area is shaded between 10am–5pm from 1 November to 31 March.
