# Climate Resilience 3.1B Open space paving, paths & sports courts

# Applies to

All subdivisions

# Objective

To provide thermally comfortable and accessible active transport networks that support health, wellbeing and climate resilience.

# Summary

Better practice is achieved by using light to medium coloured materials—such as cream, beige, white, light grey concrete, sandstone tones, or terracotta—for all public realm paving, paths, and sports courts, as demonstrated in Detailed Streetscape Plans.

Dark-coloured paving (e.g. asphalt, slate, granite) should only be used where at least 50% of the area is shaded between 10am–5pm from 1 November to 31 March. Plans must specify surface materials, colour classification, Solar Reflective Index (SRI) values, and identify all impervious surfaces.

Where feasible, explore lighter coloured aggregates or carriageway surfaces in consultation with council to reduce localised urban heat.
