# 56.04-3 Solar orientation of lots objective (opens new window)

To provide good solar orientation of lots and solar access for future dwellings.

Standard C9 (...) at least 70 percent of lots should have appropriate solar orientation.

# Summary

# Better practice

Awarded where at least 75 percent of residential lots demonstrate appropriate solar orientation.

Appropriate solar orientation is achieved when:

  • The long axis of lots is within the range of north 20° west to north 30° east, or east 20° north to east 30° south;
  • For lots between 300 m² and 500 m² that are proposed to contain dwellings built to the boundary, the long axis is within 30° east and 20° west of north;
  • Dimensions of lots are adequate to protect solar access to the lot, taking into account likely dwelling size and the relationship of each lot to the street.
