# SPR 1.1 - Walkability - Block lengths
# Applies to
All subdivisions that include a public realm

# Clause 56
# 56.06-7 Neighbourhood street network detail objective (opens new window)
To design and construct street carriageways and verges so that the street geometry and traffic speeds provide an accessible and safe neighbourhood street system for all users.
Standard C20
The design of streets and roads should:
- Provide street blocks that are generally between 120 metres and 240 metres in length and generally between 60 metres to 120 metres in width to facilitate pedestrian movement and control traffic speed.
# Summary
Better practice is awarded where the maximum street block length is 200 metres.
To meet the standard, applicants should design street blocks no longer than 200m, as shown in the Subdivision Design Response. This supports walkability, permeability, and access to destinations.
If a block exceeds 200m, an alternative performance approach may be accepted where a pedestrian and bicycle accessway is provided through the block. This should be discussed with the relevant council and respond to desire lines—reflecting how people naturally move through the area—to ensure the accessway is well-located and effective.
