# Site Layout & Liveability
Better practice for site layout and liveability involves designing subdivisions that prioritise strong connections between residents and local amenities, enhancing both functionality and quality of life.
In the Site Layout and Liveability category, BESS has a focus on actions that:
- provide a site and context plan that responds to local conditions and opportunities
- minimise cut and fill to reduce site disturbance and environmental impact
- create compact and walkable neighbourhoods with good proximity to services and amenities
- limit the use of culs-de-sacs to support connectivity and ease of movement
- deliver a diversity of lot sizes and types to support a range of housing needs
- provide open space, including community gardens, to encourage social interaction and healthy lifestyles
- establish off-road active transport networks to support walking and cycling
- ensure access to public transport networks for greater mobility and reduced car dependence
- support resource recovery through initiatives such as the Container Deposit Scheme (CDS)
