# Summary

# Excellence

Awarded where innovative approaches to supporting tree root growth in urban areas are used—such as soil vaults or structural soil systems that enable roots to grow in uncompacted soil.

While such approaches may extend beyond current guidance in the Infrastructure Design Manual (IDM), Engineering Design and Construction Manuals (EDCM), and Australian Standards, designs must still demonstrate alignment with key requirements, including a minimum tree zone of 5.0m diameter x 0.6m deep (IDM), and consider AS4970-2009 (Protection of trees on development sites) and AS4419-2018 (Soils for Landscaping and Garden Use).
