# Ecology 4.1a Planting palette - Native and indigenous plantings

# Applies to

All subdivisions

# Objective

To incorporate natural and cultural features in the design of streets and public open space where appropriate.

To protect and enhance native habitat and discourage the planting and spread of noxious weeds.

# Summary

Better practice is awarded where the planting palette for public realm areas includes at least 50% native and indigenous species.

Excellence is awarded where the planting palette for public realm areas includes at least 60% native and indigenous species.

Plant selection should reflect site conditions—such as landform, soil, and climate, as well as intended use. For example, an area set aside for biodiversity conservation / wildlife corridor / biolink may be 100% native and indigenous plantings, while the plantings for another landscaped area may select non-indigenous tree species for specific shading or other desirable characteristics.

# Documentation & evidence required

  • Site & Context Plan: Existing native and indigenous planting marked on plans including planting to be retained
  • Landscape Masterplan: Native and indigenous planting marked on plans including proposed species
